More about the Indonesian Language
History of Indonesian
Indonesian, also known as Bahasa Indonesia, is actually a standardised version of the Malay language. It was declared the official language of Indonesia in 1945, after becoming independent, although nationalists had already considered it the national language since 1928. The language is influenced by several languages such as Dutch, Arabic, Portuguese and English.
Native Speakers
More than 270 million people in Indonesia speak Indonesian. However, only 50 million of these speak it as their first language since the majority speak languages such as Sundanese, Balinese and Javanese. The Indonesians use Bahasa Indonesia when it comes to education, government, media etc. and then speak their native languages at home.
Indonesian Writing
The Latin alphabet is used for Indonesian. Words are pronounced as they are written i.e. the system is phonetic. Bahasa Indonesia does not have any tones (like Chinese has) and has extremely consistent spelling unlike English!
