More about the Dutch Language
History of Dutch
The Dutch language has a varied and interesting history, as the main language as most of the residents of the Netherlands, historically, the early beginnings of Dutch are documented back around 450 AD. Back then, we refer to this as being "Old Dutch" (not to be confused with the popular snack food manufacturer in North America of course), which then morphed into Middle Dutch, sometimes also referred to as "Diets" and then to the present-day version of the language known as Modern Dutch.
Native Speakers
Within the Netherlands, Aruba, Belgium, France and many other countries there are presently over 28 million native Dutch speakers with the majority of those in Europe.
Dutch Writing
Comprised of the 26 main letters of the ISO Latin alphabet, written Dutch also includes one digraph that is generally placed before the letter Y in the alphabet.
