More about the Romanian Language
History of Romanian
The Romanian language is a descendant (as so many other languages) of Vulgar Latin and the early history of the language is unclear, and has been the subject of much controversy amongst linguists. The written form of Romanian has undergone several adaptations including changing the entire alphabet used and the earliest known written Romanian document dates back to 1521.
Native Speakers
Throughout the world, it is estimated that there are presently over 24 million native Romanian speakers, with the overwhelming majority of those calling Romania their home.
Romanian Writing
The present, modern form of Romanian writing was only finalised in 1982 where several new letters were added to the official alphabet (Q,W,Y). Written Romanian utilises an alphabet that consists of 31 letters which is a derivative of the classic Latin alphabet.
